About Us

Pauole Hawaii Island Equine Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Laupahoehoe on Hawaii's Big Island. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible rehoming of horses that have suffered from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. Our name, "Pauole," reflects our unwavering commitment — in Hawaiian, it means "without end," symbolizing our endless dedication to the welfare of these magnificent animals.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to provide a safe haven for horses in need, restore their health and trust in humans, and place them in loving, permanent homes. We envision a Hawaii where no horse suffers from neglect or abuse, and where the bond between horses and the community is celebrated and protected for generations to come.

Why We Exist

Hawaii's Big Island is home to a significant population of horses, many of whom face hardship due to economic pressures, natural disasters, and inadequate care. Pauole Hawaii Island Equine Rescue was founded to address this critical need, providing emergency rescue services, veterinary rehabilitation, and long-term sanctuary for horses that have nowhere else to turn.

Our Programs

From emergency rescue to adoption placement, our programs cover every stage of a horse's journey from crisis to a loving home.

Emergency Rescue & Intake

Our trained rescue team responds to reports of neglected or abused horses across the Big Island, providing immediate veterinary assessment, nutrition, and safe shelter upon intake.

Rehabilitation & Healing

Each rescued horse receives a customized rehabilitation plan developed with our veterinary partners, addressing physical health, nutritional recovery, and behavioral rehabilitation to rebuild trust.

Adoption & Sanctuary

Rehabilitated horses are carefully matched with qualified adopters through our thorough adoption process. Horses that cannot be rehomed remain in our permanent sanctuary program, cared for with love for life.

Community Impact

Since our establishment, Pauole Hawaii Island Equine Rescue has become a vital resource for the equine community on the Big Island. We have rescued and rehabilitated numerous horses, many of whom were in critical condition upon arrival. Our work extends beyond rescue — we educate the community about responsible horse ownership, partner with local veterinarians and farriers, and collaborate with law enforcement on animal cruelty investigations. Every horse we save represents a life transformed and a community made stronger.
